The DUMAIS FAMILY genealogy page.

Link to my ancestors

My name is Jocelyn, son of Alfred. I was born in Lac-Bouchette, a small village in central Province of Quebec’ region of Lac-St-Jean. Married to Jeanne-Mance Belanger since 1974.
Descendant of Vincent, son of Pierre Dumay and Catherine Michaud. I am a member of Pierre’s ninth generation.
I am also great-grand son of two pioneer: Paschal Dumais the first settler in Lac-Bouchette and Francois Gaudreault who was the first settler in what is now known Mistassini.

The Origins…

The son of Jean Dumay alias Dumas & Demetx dit Rossignol and Marguerite Richard. Pierre Dumais was born about 1714 in the Province of Auvergne, diocese of Clermont-Ferrand, department of the Puy-of-Dome, in central of France.
Thorough very little is known about his origins of Omble or Combes, to offered any possibilities to discover his precise birth place will remains mystery until search are undertaken in France ??? Question surround his arrival in Nouvelle-France. Was he a soldier, a volunteer, a trafficant? No document provides information on this subject.

The first mention of Pierre Dumais in Nouvelle-France was of his marriage with Marie Anne Chamberland, celebrated on April 26, 1745 in Kamouraska. Sieur Alexandre Morel de la Durantaye was present, so we can assume that Pierre Dumais was related to him.
Following his marriage, Pierre Dumais and his wife resided a few years in Quebec where he worked as ship carpenter. At the time, a specialized trade requiring skill training.

His arrival to Kamouraska was marked by the premature death of Marie Anne Chamberland on May 14, 1755 the age of 29.

I see that Henry Dumas is on all the family info on Ancestry. His father was Eugene Dumas, Mother Margaret Trombley, not Joseph and Jane Dumas’s son. The Henry you see on the census was Emory Dumas, not Henry.

  6. Carol Dumais Blank dit :

The photos that are published for my family are not correctly attributed. Victor and Arthur are not Dumais, but Derouin. The photo that shows Lucien, is actually of my grandfather Eugene Dumais, and his wife Marie (Flossie).

  7. Don Dumais dit :

    Hi Jocelyn,
I, too, am a descendent of Pierre Dumais, but by his second wife, Marie-Catherine Michaud, whom he married in 1775 and their son, Vincent. i’d like to send some information which I found on the net but could not e-mail you. My address is above if you’d like to have it. I was unaware that he married previously. I gather you are descended from Pierre and Marie-Anne Chamberland ?
In any event, I thought I would touch base with you. Finding relatives is always exciting.
Below, I’ve included the line that I follow.
    Regards,
    Janet Adey

  10. Tom Douglas dit :

I have written a Canadian best-seller (« Canadian Spies ») that includes the wartime experiences of Lucien Dumais and Raymond LaBrosse – who set up an escape network for downed Allied air crew in Nazi-Occupied France. After D-Day, they fought with the French Resistance. This week, I received an email from, Robert Hamsely of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, a former Captain with the US 15th Cavalary who fought alongside Lucien and Raymond. They rescued the people of a small village in Brittany who were about to be executed by the Nazis for harbouring members of the Resistance. Captain Hamsley and his five tanks were able to help Lucien, Raymond and their colleagues defeat the Germans without a loss of life to the townspeople. When Captain Hamsely read about my book on-line, he wrote me to see if I could put him in touch with any of Lucien’s or Raymond’s surviving relatives. Can anybody help me with this? If so, please contact me at tmdouglas@cogeco.ca.
